Tiffany engagement ring setting stands the test of time

The Tiffany setting has six claws that make for a secure setting and allow for each claw to be smaller.
tiffany NEW YORK — Although the ancient Egyptians, Romans and even the Greeks have been credited with creating the first engagement rings, the history of the modern mementoes can actually be tracked to a much more recent era and attributed to a brand that continues to lead the jewelry pack: Tiffany & Co.
tiffany “Our design philosophy is to stand the test of time,” Wendy Eagan, group vice-president, Tiffany & Co. Canada says.
tiffany “We are the authority in the design category. You can go into other jewellers and not see the assortment and array of designs that we have.”
tiffany The New York-based company created a stir in the engagement industry in 1886 with the introduction of its now-iconic Tiffany Setting.
tiffany Where rings had previously been created with a bezel shape, where the diamonds were set within the band for a flat surface, the Tiffany design set the stone above the band, placing it front and centre.
tiffany “The Tiffany Setting has six prongs, so the diamond itself is lifted off the band so the focus is on the stone,” Eagan explains.
“The setting allows the light to pass through the stone in the most beautiful way.”
The Tiffany setting, which has never been modified in its 127-year existence, continues, to this day, to be the international jeweller’s bestselling engagement-ring design.
The original setting reigned solo for 113 years before the company introduced another revolutionary design: The Lucida.
Meaning the brightest star in a constellation, The Lucida is specifically cut to maximize the stone’s brilliance. The patented design has since become one of the brand’s strongest sellers.
Since the introduction of The Lucida in 1999, Tiffany & Co. has debuted about 10 new ring settings marketed directly at the engagement ring shopper, but nearly every ring the company has ever offered could be considered engagement-eligible, according to Eagan.
“It’s sort of endless regarding ring designs and how they are used in engagement,” she says.
Round diamonds have historically been the company’s strongest sellers, with variations such as diamonds down the shank, around the bezel or a bezel setting without diamonds being a few of the most popular designs.
“We have always done classic settings of different shaped diamonds,” Eagan says, citing emerald-cut, pear-shaped and heart-shaped diamonds as standout alternatives to the ever-popular round cut.
And while traditional diamonds have widely been considered to be the most popular stones for engagement rings, thanks to the Royal Wedding, Eagan has witnessed a revival in coloured stones.
“We have always had them. Even before Lady Diana ever wore a sapphire with white diamonds around it, other people wore it too,” she says.
“But when you see a fashion icon wearing something as beautiful as (Diana’s and now the Duchess of Cambridge) ring, it does spark an interest in that design.”
Eagan attributes the blue stone’s longevity to its “dramatic” colour and durable exterior.
Three-stone rings, gemstone rings with diamonds on either side and gemstone- and diamond-alternating band rings have historically been very popular styles — and continue to garner buyers’ attention today.
“I think any one of these would stand the test of time,” Eagan says.
But at the end of the day, Eagan is hesitant to put shoppers’ preferences into too small of a Tiffany Blue box.
She remarks that while settings and stones may change, it’s the emotion behind the ring itself that has always remained the same.
“I think it is the ultimate symbol for love. It’s the ultimate symbol for commitment,” Eagan says.
“That’s something that has never changed.”

CLICK HERE to read more about engagement ring quality
CLICK HERE to read more about our exclusive tour into the Tiffany & Co. workshop © Copyright (c) The Vancouver Sun E-mail this Article Print this Article Share this Article
